The first match of the all-India women’s Twenty20 cricket tournament held here Tuesday saw Chandigarh beating Uttar Pradesh by eight wickets at the Amar Nath Vidyashram ground.
Chandigarh won the toss and elected to field. UP scored 118 runs after being put into bat and in reply Chandigarh romped to the 119-run target, losing just two wickets. Chandigarh captain Sunaina, who scored a dazzling 48 runs, was declared ‘Woman of the Match’.
UP Transport Minister Manpal Singh, who inaugurated the meet, promised his government’s support and financial assistance for promoting sporting activities in the state. A large number of sports enthusiasts had gathered to see players of the eight state teams as they lined up for introduction before the commencement of the inaugural match.

Also present on the occasion were former India players Hemlata Kala and Poonam Yadav and Asian weightlifting champion Meenakshi Gaur. Teams from the eight states participating in the tournament were introduced after a march past, and a cultural programme by students.
Teams from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh are in pool A, while teams from Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana are in pool B. The tournament is supported by the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Cricket Association.
