Chandika Hathurusingha seems to be in a fix. He recently resigned as Bangladesh cricket’s head coach following their winless tour of South Africa. The Sri Lankan is in talks with his country’s cricket board and looks set to coach his national side, but there is a small hurdle in between. Apparently, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have asked him to serve a 3-month notice period before taking up any new appointment. According to BCB, this is a part of Hathurusingha’s contract.
Hathurusingha hangs in between SLC-BCB
BCB chief executive, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, made the announcement while clarifying on the board’s stance after Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala sent a letter to his BCB counterpart. He wanted to to know whether they can approach Hathurusingha to appoint him as Sri Lanka’s head coach. According to the agreement between BCB and Hathurusingha, the latter cannot part ways with Bangladesh until January 15; before Sri Lanka‘s tour to Bangladesh in early 2018. The agreement clearly states that if the coach quits at any point before the end of his actual tenure, he would need to serve a three-month notice period.
“After the letter of (Thilanga) Sumathipala to our president, it is a matter between two boards and hopefully we will have a solution in this regard soon. As he does not want to stay and anyone can approach him, and accepting that is entirely his personal matter, the board [BCB] has very little to do in this regard. What we are looking forward is trying to come to a solution as per our agreement,” Nizamuddin concluded.
Under Hathurusingha, Bangladesh became a lethal force at home and reached the knockouts of 2015 World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy.
