Chennai Super Kings star opener made history on Wednesday at Eden Gardens during his debut match for the five-time champions. He became the Indian batter with the highest strike rate on debut in the Indian Premier League.
Urvil reached this milestone while chasing a target of 180 against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders. He smashed 31 off 11 deliveries, including one four and four sixes, at a strike rate of 281.82.
However, he became the second Indian batter to achieve this feat in his debut IPL match, as the highest strike rate came form the former England batter Luke Wright who made 34 in 10 balls which included six fours and a six at a strike rate of 340.00 for Pune Warriors India against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Mohali in 2013.
Urvil is known for his explosive batting style, he has represented Gujarat in domestic cricket. In a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Tripura last year, the batter broke Indian star Rishabh Pant’s record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian. It was also the second-fastest century ever in T20 cricket, as he scored an unbeaten 113 off just 35 balls, hitting seven fours and 12 sixes at a strike rate of 322.86 while chasing a target of 156.
Urvil has scored at an average of 26.51, with a strike rate of 172.15 in 48 T20s, which includes two centuries and four fifties. His highest score is 115*.
CSK stays at the bottom of the points table with just three wins and nine losses. Meanwhile, KKR sits in sixth place with 11 points, having registered five wins, six losses, and one no result from 12 matches. Their hopes of making the playoffs have significantly diminished.
