West Indies cricket has been going steadily downhill for some time. Their star players — Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo and Sunil Narine — have missed out on various games across formats owing to rifts with West Indies cricket board (WICB). However, there finally seems to be some good news for their fans. However, according to latest reports, the spat seems to have faded away and there has been significant progress between players and board. If everything goes well, these players can make an appearance in West Indies’ forthcoming tour of England.
Speaking of the issue, Gayle, who recently played the T20I against India, stated: “The fans were happy to see me back on the field representing West Indies. Hopefully, things can get better. Hopefully I can play a few more games. I definitely want to play the 2019 World Cup,” Gayle said. “Things are beginning to open up a little more now between players and the board. It’s looking good, and we’ve to try and build from this to get the best players out on the field.”
On the other hand, the latest to join the list of players having fallout with the board was Darren Bravo. He was a part of the side till late 2016, but his remarks against West Indies board and selectors led to his omission since then. As a result, West Indies have lost the plot in all formats barring T20Is, and are running against time to directly qualify for ICC World Cup 2019. They even failed to participate in the Champions Trophy in June. Currently languishing at 9th spot, West Indies have a lot of catching to do if they are to make it to the marquee event directly.
The return of their superstars will unearth fighting spirit which has been missing from West Indies’ ranks under Jason Holder.
