Chris Rogers was out just five runs short of a century on Day Two of the first Ashes Test between England and Australia at Cardiff on Thursday. The left-hand opener, who had scored his seventh fifty in as many innings, ended up edging Mark Wood behind to Jos Buttler. It was Wood’s maiden Ashes wicket, and Rogers’ seventh consecutive non-hundred. He had scored 95 against India as recently as six months ago. Rogers emulated the likes of Sir Everton Weekes, Andy Flower, Kumar Sangakkara, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul by scoring those seven fifties. Honours were shared at tea on Day Two, as Rogers stood tall unbeaten on 75 at the break after David Warner and Steven Smith were guilty of throwing their wickets away with avoidable strokes. James Anderson and Mark Wood bowled well, but Staurt Broad and Moeen Ali were guilty of bowling a few too many hittable deliveries.
