After bringing popular cricketing tournament Indian Premier League under the Entertainment Tax regime, Tamil Nadu government today proposed to levy the tax on another Twenty20 series, the Champions League.
Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister BV Ramanaa moved a bill in the state Assembly to further amend the Tamil Nadu Entertainments Tax Act, 1939 for this purpose.
Ramanaa said the Champions League Twenty 20 cricket tournament was played among the top domestic teams from major cricketing nations and in India the BCCI was conducting matches for this tournament.
The Government has now proposed to include Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament also within the definition of the term “entertainment” and to levy entertainment tax under the said Tamil Nadu Act X of 1939, he said.
It has therefore been decided to amend the Tamil Nadu Entertainment Act, 1939 (Tamil Nadu Act X of 1939) suitably for the purpose, he said.
He recalled that government had made amendments to the same Act in 2011 to bring the levy entertainment tax on IPL.
