CLT20 2014: What Mumbai Indians, Lahore Lions need to do to qualify for main draw

Mumbai Indians have to win against Northern Knights to have strong chances of qualifying.

The last day of the Champions League T20 (CLT20) 2014 qualifiers is an interesting one in prospect. While Northern Knights are virtually through to the main draw, Mumbai Indians and Lahore Lions have all to play for. Southern Express are out of the tournament after losing to Lahore Lions. Southern Express and Northern Knights win: Northern Knights will go through easily with three wins under their belt. However, Southern Express, Lahore Lions and Mumbai Indians would be on four points each. That is where the net run-rates will come into picture to decide. As things stand now, Mumbai have a positive net run-rate, but the other two are struggling in the negatives. Thus Southern Express may need a big win to have a chance of going through.

Lahore Lions and Mumbai Indians win: In this case, we will have three teams, i.e. Lahore, Mumbai and Northern Knights on eight points each. The net run-rates would then decide. Lahore would want to win big and strengthen their case. If this scenario materializes, Mumbai and Knights may well be through considering their net run-rate is much better at this stage.

Lahore Lions lose and Mumbai Indians win: This is simple. Mumbai would get through in that case. Mumbai though will know what they have to do as they play the evening game. If Lahore win, Mumbai would know the net run-rate equations required for them to beat Northern Knights.

Lahore Lions win and Mumbai Indians lose: Lahore would get through in this case with more points on the board. The net run-rates would not come into the picture then.
