A collapse in the batting lineup throughout the match by Sunrisers Hyderabad led to Kolkata Knight Riders handing the Hyderabad-based franchise their biggest-ever defeat in history of IPL by 80 runs.
Winning the toss, SRH had opted to bowl first.

Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine came to open the batting for Kolkata, but could not last long. Quinton was dismissed by the 2nd over of the innings, followed by Sunil going back by the 3rd over. The match went on with quite a decent pace after that, as the team was at 53/2 after the powerplay. The constant pace kept going till the half inning mark as KKR was at 84/2 after 10 overs.

However, the team saw the crucial wicket of Ajinkya Rahane in the 11th over, which had surely increased the pressure on the batters. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was the next batter to leave the pitch by, and by the end of 13 overs, KKR were 4 down and had just managed to score 108 runs on the board.

Rinku Singh then stepped on the field, and batted along with Venkatesh Iyer. Both the batters played with great rhythm, making precise ad careful shots over the stadium and rotating strikes. By the time 15 overs were finished, the team was still at a decent score of 122 runs. However, then the batters changed their gears and started to playing aggressively.

From 15th over onwards, both Rinku and Venkatesh played aggressively and had brought the total up to 166 runs, and by the time their innings came to an end, Venkatesh Iyer had got dismissed after scoring a half-century, and the team posted a total of 200 runs on the board.

The chase of Sunrisers Hyderabad began with back to back setbacks, as opened Travis Head got dismissed in the first over of their innings, followed by Abhishek Sharma getting dismissed in the second and Ishan Kishan going back in the third over. SRH were at 9/3 after the first 3 overs, and were at 33/3 after the powerplay.

Adding to the breakdown in the early batting order, Nitish Kumar Reddy got caught out in the 7th over as SRH was reeling at 51/4. This dismal performance and fall of wickets continued, as Kamindu Mendis was the next prey to KKR bowling lineup.

Hyderabad was struggling to stay afloat as they were half team down by 10 overs, and were 6 down by the end of 11 overs as Aniket Varma also got dismissed. The pressure was rising, and was visible by the performance of the batters, as they had barely managed to reach a score of 100 runs after 14 overs.

The final phase of the match also witnessed a break in the batting lineup, as the team first lost the much-important wicket of Heinrich Klaasen in the 15th over, followed by back-to-back dismissals of Pat Cummins and Simarjeet Singh as the team was struggling at 117/9 after 16 overs.
