New Zealand fast bowler Chris Martin has become the first recipient of the Sir Richard Hadlee medal at The National Bank New Zealand Cricket Awards in Auckland.
Martin was already nominated for the Fans’ Choice Award for his overwhelming spell of Test bowling against India in Ahmadabad where he claimed the wickets of batting heavyweights like Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni. Martin returned with the figures of five for 63.
Martin has claimed 18 wickets for the national team, 31 for Auckland Aces in domestic cricket and 11 for New Zealand A against Zimbabwe for a total of 60 First-Class wickets in 2010-11 season in the stipulated period for the award.
New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Justin Vaughan praised the 36 year old fast bowler’s performance and said that he was a worthy winner of the inaugural Sir Richard Hadlee medal.
He was quoted in New Zealand Cricket’s official website, blackcaps.co.nz as saying, “Chris works very hard and has strongly led the BLACKCAPS and Aces bowling attack for this past season and the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal is well deserved.
“There were a number of individuals who put their hand up for the supreme award but no one can deny that in the past 12 months Chris has been a stand-out performer in international and domestic First-Class cricket.
“Chris is a well-liked sporting personality and will be a popular winner with cricket fans and his peers. It gives me enormous pleasure to congratulate him on his achievement.”
The Sir Richard Hadlee Medal, named after New Zealand’s greatest cricketer, honours New Zealand Cricket’s best cricketer of the year.
