A brilliant batting display and a fantastic bowling effort to complement it, lead St Lucia Zouks to their 2nd win in 3 days against a strong Jamaica Tallawahs unit in the 30th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The USA leg ended in disappointment for Jamaica Tallawah’s captain Chris Gayle as his side succumbed to a 17-run defeat at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida. The outcome of the fixture does not have any bearings on the play-offs scenario though. Guyana Amazon Warriors retained their top spot, along with Tallawahs at second, followed by St Lucia Zouks and Trinbago Knight Riders at 3rd and 4th respectively. After being put in to bat first, St Lucia Zouks had a splendid start to their innings. Openers Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles began slowly but then raced on to 48-0 in the first 6 overs. Charles reached his half-century off just 27 balls, as Tallawahs struggled to break the partnership. Garey Mathurin then finally produced the wickets as the 104-run stand was broken and Charles was back in to the dug-out. Charles had hit 9 fours and 2 sixes before he departed.

Fletcher though, carried on. Michael Hussey who arrived to bat alongside him, could not contribute much to the cause and was out for just 8 off 11 deliveries. He became Rovman Powell’s first victim. Australian all-rounder Shane Watson then came out to bat.

In the 18th over, Fletcher too lost his wicket after scoring 70 off 54 balls. He hit 4 fours and 5 sixes in his knock. But Watson’s power-hitting-cameo made matters worse for the Tallawahs. He finished with 42 off just 17 taking his team to a challenging total of 194-3 in 20 overs.

Gayle did show signs of his full-of-strength display as he hit 3 fours and 2 sixes before getting out for 30 from 15 deliveries. It was Watson who claimed his wicket as captain Darren Sammy took the catch. Shane Shillingford then dented the Tallawah’s chase further as David Miller took the catch to dismiss Chadwick Walton for a run-a-ball 15.

Kumar Sangakkara, Powell, Andre Russell and Timroy Allen did get starts but failed to make most of the chance as the Zouks kept taking wickets after regular intervals. With 43 needed off 18 balls, Shakib Al Hasan and Alex Ross tried but could not take their team over the line as Watson and Jerome Taylor bowled two terrific overs.

Brief Scores:

St Lucia Zouks 194 for 3 in 20 overs (Andre Fletcher 70, Johnson Charles 64, Shane Watson 42; Rovman Powell 2 for 45) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 177 for 6 in 20 overs (Chris Gayle 30, Rovman Powell 28; Shane Shillingford 2 for 30) by 17 runs
