Zimbabwe middle-order batsman Craig Ervine played an impressive knock as he added 73 crucial runs and was involved in a couple of good partnerships as Zimbabwe finished on a total of 253 for the loss of seven wickets in the second of the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday. Earlier, Zimbabwe skipper Elton Chigumbura won the toss and elected to bat first, as he made just a change in the form of Hamilton Masakadza, who replaced Chamu Chibhabha, while for Afghanistan, there was a change as well as Yamin was replaced by Rokhan Barakzai. Zimbabwe started their innings on a good note, with the openers in the form of Peter Moor and Richmond Mutumbani, who put up a healthy opening stand of 71 runs, as they brought up the 50 for Zimbabwe in the mandatory powerplay of 10 overs. It was not until the 16th over, when Moor fell just after scoring his maiden half-century in ODIs off 49 deliveries, including five boundaries and three sixes, to Mohammad Nabi after being stmped. It was the next pair of new batsmen in the form of Masakadza and Craig Ervine, that put up a strong stand of 98 runs for the third wicket, before Masakadza missed out on his half-century by just three runs and fell in the 40th over to Mohammad Nabi, after being bowled by him. It was then the pair of Chigumbura and Ervine, that put-up another 40 runs for the fourth wicket, before the skipper fell for 13 to Barakzai in the 46th over.
Meanwhile, Ervine scored his half-century as well off 80 deliveries, including three boundaries and a six, before being dismissed for 73 to Dawlat Zadran in the 47th over, followed by Malcolm Waller for a golden duck in the same over. Sikandar Rza fell for 13 to Dawlat Zadran in the 49th over, while the remaining batsen in the form of Luke Jongwe and Graeme Cremer batted it out as Zimbabwe finished at the total of 253 for the loss of seven.
