Another five wickets and Dale Steyn will surpass Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in Tests. Steyn has 417 wickets from 85 Tests at 22.30. Steyn has been named in the South African squad that will play the historic pink-ball four-day Test at Port Elizabeth. Pollock, who played from 1995 to 2008, finished with 422 wickets at 23.11 from 108 Tests. Steyn would have reached the mark long back but injuries have hampered his march. He has not played Test cricket for over a year. He has just played 4 Tests in the last two years.

Steyn, at 34, does not want to talk about the possibility of becoming South Africa’s all-time leading wicket-taker. South Africa have a steep challenge ahead next month when they take on India for a full tour. They were humiliated 0-3 in India in 2015. Steyn will be key to South Africa’s chances of returning the favours.

“I am still fitter than the youngest guys in the side. It was just about getting through this year and trying to decide whether I still wanted to do it… I’ll play until I’m not good enough or someone’s better than me. “Every time someone talks about a record I get injured. So I’m not bothered. Let’s just go play. Let’s see what happens,” said Steyn as reported by AFP.

Steyn is a part of the Cricket South Africa Invitation XI that is playing Zimbabwe in a day-night tour game at Paarl. Steyn bowled 12 wicketless overs for just 16 runs as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 196 on Day One.
