Dane Vilas struck 161 runs off 165 balls Friday as title holders Western Cape Cobras retained control of a South African SuperSport Series fifth-round clash at Northern Titans.

The 26-year-old wicketkeeper lashed 24 fours and two sixes in a 256-minute spell at the Willowmoore Park crease as Cobras reached 394 and a 282-run first-innings lead.

Titans improved on their dismal 112 first time in the middle to be on 150-4 by close of play as storm clouds gathered and predicted bad weather could pose the biggest threat to a Cobras side sitting pretty with two days left.

After a series of SuperSport centuries earned him a South Africa squad recall for the two-Test series against Australia next month, Titan Jacques Rudolph was out for two in his first knock and went for 22 second time round.

He, fellow opener Rushdie Jappie and Henry Davids were second-innings victims of Cobras seamer Vernon Philander, who is also in line to face the Australians at Newlands.

Central Knights added 42 runs to their overnight total to make 349 in Kimberley and were 71-0 in their second innings after bowling out Eastern Cape Warriors for 206 with Johan van der Wath and Quinton Friend capturing four wickets each. (AFP)
