Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first in the first Test at Headingley against England. They were off to a slow start in the first few overs. Captain Alastair Cook and Alex Hales opened the innings for them. Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Pradeep opened the bowling attack for Sri Lanka. Hales and Cook were cautious to begin with as the ball was swinging. At the 20 over mark England were 49-0 but things suddenly turned in favour of the visitors after that. Dasun Shanaka took 3 wickets in his first few overs to send England on the back foot. At lunch the home side were 57-3. Shanaka produced an excellent spell of fast bowling as he first picked up the wicket of Alastair Cook who was closing-in on the 10,000 runs mark. He couldn’t get to that record and instead was sent back after edging one to the keeper for 16.
Nick Compton then came out to bat for England but couldn’t even get off the mark. He was taken at first slip by Thirimanne off Shanaka’s bowling. The youngster was on fire as he used swing to perfection.
But the big wicket of Joe Root meant England were completely on the back foot and needed a partnership from thereon. Root, was caught at gully trying to drive a ball and was taken by Kusal Mendis, giving Shanaka his third wicket. Root was out for a duck too.
James Vince then walked out to bat alongside Alex Hales, who was looking good at the crease.
Brief scores:
England 57 for 3 in 27 overs (Alastair Cook 16, Alex Hales 38*; Dasun Shanaka 3 for 6) vs Sri Lanka
