Whatmore sacked as Zimbabwe head coach

With not even two weeks to go for India’s tour of Zimbabwe to commence, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) have sacked head coach Dav Whatmore. According to an official release, the decision was taken after review of the technical reports on the senior men’s team’s performance in the recently-concluded ICC World T20 in India. Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the main draw of the tournament as Afghanistan piped them with three wins and reached to play with the already qualified teams in Super Tens. Makhaya Ntini, the former South African pacer and bowling coach of Zimbabwe, has taken over in an acting capacity until Whatmore’s successor is appointed. According to cricbuzz.com, the ICC World T20 2016 was one of the main reasons for axing Dav Whatmore as the board had run out of patience to wait for positive results from his coaching. On the other hand, the team management have also relieved national team’s skipper, Hamilton Masakadza of leadership duties across all formats. Graeme Creamer, his deputy, will take his place.

In more changes to their team, Zimbabwe cricket have appointed another South Africqan, Lance Klusner as their batting coach. Tatenda Taibu, the former Zimbabwean captain, has been appointed the new convener of a revamped selection panel that will include a new senior men’s national team head coach and his assistant. The release stated that Taibu will also have additional responsibilities in development and high performance, and will also assist the board in bringing former Zimbabwe players back into local cricket.
