Cricket Australia confirmed that David Warner will miss Australia’s upcoming Qantas Tour of Bangladesh on Friday. Warner was struck by a bouncer from English fast bowler Steven Finn during the second One-Day International (ODI) between both the sides at Lord’s. Warner, who recently had shared a picture of the X-Ray showing he had fractured his left thumb, has already returned to Australia with his family. He was reviewed by a hand specialist in Sydney yesterday, and although he won’t require surgery it was determined that he will not recover in time for the two-Test series against the subcontinental nation. According to Cricket Australia, “It’s really disappointing. I never want to miss a match for Australia but I’ll be doing everything I possibly can to get back as quickly as possible,” Warner said.
Meanwhile, Executive Team Manager of Australia Pat Howard said, “David has been told that the fracture will take at least four weeks to stabilise and a further two weeks before he can start batting and catching again. He will be reviewed by the specialist at the end of the month to determine when he can resume playing.”
He further added, “Ideally we’d like him to play the Sheffield Shield round beginning on 27 October as preparation for the New Zealand series. In the meantime he will begin a modified gym program in Sydney. He is naturally disappointed to be missing a Test tour, particularly his first as vice-captain of the Australian team.” READ: Shane Watson is a role model for kids: David Warner
When the selectors meet in the coming days to discuss the squad for the tour, they will be asked to nominate a vice-captain for that tour. Although Nathan Lyon likely appears as the candidate to take on the vice-captaincy, experienced first-class pair Adam Voges and Peter Nevill, both new to the Test side in 2015, could also be considered for the role.
