Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag, delighted with the squad at his disposal, believes that if the side delivers to potential it can figure in the play-off week of the coming DLF Indian Premier League tournament (IPL) 2012.

In a wide-ranging chat, Sehwag said he hoped the inflammation in his sacroiliac joint would subside soon. “Hopefully, I will be fine and will start working on my strength work when the inflammation is gone. I didn t play the full IPL season last year because of my shoulder injury, but I am looking forward to play a full season for Daredevils,” he said.

Sehwag also spoke about his role in the restructuring of the squad this season and addressed some issues raised by the Delhi Daredevils fans, including the absence of a world class spinner in the ranks.

On his role in the restructuring of the squad:

I clearly asked for specific players and got them, especially Mahela Jayawardene, Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor and Andre Russell. Hopefully we will deliver and live up to the expectations of the Delhi Daredevils supporters. They were disappointed last season. I can see that the people are excited about the Delhi Daredevils this season and they are looking forward to this edition of IPL.

On leading a team with such players:

It doesn t matter who is leading the side. Whether it is Virender Sehwag, Mahela Jayawardene, Kevin Pietersen or any other senior player, they understand that I have a job to do for the Delhi Daredevils. They know that have to listen to me and cooperate with me. And I know that all these star batsmen very well and I have very good relationships with them. It is good that they are playing for the Delhi Daredevils They can help me, guide me. I have the opportunity to learn from them also. It is a good opportunity for everyone to play together.

On the Indian bowlers in the attack:

I think it is good that we have a lot of Indian bowlers in the attack. I can then give the chance to foreign batsmen to be a part of the XI. I am confident that have bowlers like Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, Irfan Pathan and Shahbaz Nadeem and other all-rounders can do the job as a bowling unit. Basically T20 is a batsman s game and if the bowlers can restrict the opposition to 150 or 160 or even 180, we can chase that down with the kind of batting we have got.

On why the team did not secure a specialist spinner at the auction:

I think we tried everything but we were not left with enough in the auction purse to buy a world class spinner. We needed some top-class batsmen rather than one good quality spinner. We can rely on our fast bowling department which is very good. I think Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron did a good job whenever they played last season as did Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel. I am relying on my fast bowling attack rather than spin. You can t have everything in your team but you have to utilise whatever you have got to win the game.

On the possibility of his bowling more this season:

Why not? Last year I was playing with a shoulder injury. This year my shoulder is absolutely fine. I have already bowled many overs in Test matches and ODIs. Hopefully, I will bowl for Delhi Daredevils as well.

On the new Indian players in the Delhi Daredevils squad:

The one thing I will tell them there is an opportunity for them. When they get the chance to play for Delhi Daredevils, they have to deliver for themselves. Then the whole world will notice their performance and may be they will get a chance to play for the country.

On the beauty of IPL:

As there are many players from overseas, the players will get to know their culture and behavior, how they prepare for a game and what they do outside the game. Our youngsters are getting the opportunity to meet those big, successful international players who can share their experience with the youngsters and guide them.
