Deodhar Trophy 2014-15: East Zone edge out West Zone by 24 runs to lift title

Ashok Dinda’s four-wicket haul propelled East Zone to a 24-run win over West Zone in the final of the Deodhar Trophy 2014-15 played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Wednesday. East Zone last won Deodhar Trophy in 2003-04.

West Zone lost the plot after the Kedar Jadhav was dismissed on 97. Akshar Patel who smacked three boundaries after Jadhav’s arrival perished quickly. The last five wickets fell in a matter of just 50 runs.

Chasing a target of 269 posted by East Zone, West Zone were reduced to 37 for three in 10.3 overs as fast-bowler Ashok Dinda struck thrice. Dinda ran in fast and got the ball to swirl away from the batsmen. His first victim was Smit Patel was went back walking in the fifth over of the match after he tried to cut a good length delivery pitched outside off but got a faint edge to the wicketkeeper. Sheldon Jackson followed Patel in the 7th over when he was caught at first slip by Saurabh Tiwary. Ambati Rayudu struck for two consecutive boundaries in the 11th over before a chased a full length delivery and went back leaving Dinda ecstatic.

Jadhav and Ankit Bawne started the repair work and made sure West Zone don’t lose anymore wickets. They both kept the scoreboard ticking and also hit the occasional big hits. Bawne and Jadhav added 74 runs for the fourth wicket before Bawne was dismissed leg-before on the bowling of Shahbaz Nadeem.

Earlier, East Zone reached to a total of 269 in the stipulated 50 overs. Manoj Tiwary again came good with the bat as he hit 75 runs off 92 balls before he bundled out by Jadhav.  Samantray and and 16-year-old youngster Virat Singh also chipped in with individual half-centuries. East Zone had a sour start to their innings as both Shreevats Goswami and Ishank Jaggi were sent back to the pavilion.

Virat Singh and Tiwary came together and started to built the innings again and stitched 135-run partnership for the third wicket. After the dismissal of Tiwary and Virat lower middle-order did well to take East Zone to a score past 250.
