Dhaka Dynamites wrote their name on the Bangladesh Premier League 2016-17 trophy as they defeated Rajshahi Kings in the finals by 56 runs. Rajshahi Kings were bundled out for a mere 103 in 17.4 overs in their bid to chase down the target of 160 set by the Dhaka Dynamites. Kumar Sangakkara was adjudged Man of the Match for his innings of 36 off 33 balls while Abu Jayed was the star bowler for the Dynamites as he took 2 for 12 in his spell of 3 overs. Kings opener Mominul Haque top-scored with 27, Sabbir Rahman got 26 and Samit Patel 17; they were the only ones to score more than 6.
Rajshahi Kings asked the Dhaka Dynamites to bat first as the wicket was supposedly conducive to the team bowling first. Dynamites openers Mehedi Maruf and Evin Lewis started off on a nervy note, surviving some close calls to survive the first few overs. But the resistance from these two was ended by Mehedi Hasan when he dismissed Maruf (12) on the team total of 23. Nasir Hossain (5) and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat (5) departed in quick succession, and Dynamites were left trembling for 42 for 3 after 6 overs.
As wickets were falling at a regular interval, Lewis kept going on at the other end. He accelerated once Sangakkara came out to bat at No. 5. The two put up an important 41 off just 25 deliveries, and at one point it seemed the pair would take their team to a comfortable position as both looked settled at the crease.
But completely against the run of play, Farhad Reza got the wicket of Lewis (45), breaking the dangerous-looking partnership. Dwayne Bravo (13), Andre Russell (8), Shakib Al Hasan (12) and Alauddin Babu (1) all departed in no time leaving Dynamites in a spot of bother.
Watching the wickets falling in no time at the other end, Sangakkara took matters in his own hand and implied all his batting experience in the death overs of the first innings. His 36 came in handy for the Dynamites ensuring they posted a respectable target of 160 against the Kings despite Reza’s 3 for 28 from 4 overs.
The Kings lost opener Nurul Hasan in the second over of the second innings. Mominul and No. 3 Sabbir tried building an important partnership for the second wicket, adding 47 runs in 43 deliveries. But these two fell in a matter of 4 balls and the game slipped out of the Kings’ hands completely. With the number of balls reducing every second the runs were hard to come as the Dynamites bowlers displayed some great bowling variations in the slog overs.
James Franklin (5), Darren Sammy (6), Mehedi (1), Reza (2) and Nazmul Islam (1) all tried going for big shots but ended up walking back to the dressing room. From 62 for 1 the Kings collapsed to 103. Jayed was supported by Sunzamul Islam (2 for 30) and skipper Shakib (2 for 30) Bravo (1 for 20) and Russell (1 for 21).
With 396 runs at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 118.2, 10 wickets at 24.70 and an economy rate of 7.41 and 6 catches, Mahmudullah was named Man of the Tournament.
Brief scores:
Dhaka Dynamites 159 for 9 (Evin Lewis 45, Kumar Sangakkara 36; Farhad Reza 3 for 28) beat Rajshahi Kings 103 (Mominul Haque 27, Sabbir Rahman 26; Abu Jayed 2 for 12) by 56 runs.
Man of the Match: Kumar Sangakkara.
Man of the Series: Mahmudullah.
