Digvesh Rathi, who dismissed Naman Dhir and followed it up with a “notebook” celebration during the IPL 2025 clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday night in Lucknow, has been handed a 50% match fee fine along with two demerit points.
Meanwhile, LSG skipper Rishabh Pant has also been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate in the 12-run victory.
It was the second such offence and penalty, for Rathi under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. He was fined 25% of his match fees in the previous match as he sent Priyansh Arya back with a similar gesture against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.
That incident earned him one demerit point. Since it was his second Level 1 code of conduct breach, the latest offense resulted in a heftier fine, despite him being at a fair distance from the batter. The offense added two more demerit points to the one he had from the earlier occasion.
According to the IPL Code of Conduct, four demerit points equal one suspension point, which means that the player will be forced to sit out in one match when that mark is reached. Since demerit points stay on a player’s record for 36 months, Rathi will need to exercise caution in the upcoming seasons as well.
Pant, who another disappointing day with the bat, scoring just 2 runs off six balls after managing only 17 runs across his previous three innings, became the third captain to be fined for his team’s slow over-rate in IPL 2025, following MI’s Hardik Pandya and RR’s Riyan Parag.
