Dimitri Mascarenhas was appointed full-time as the bowling coach of the New Zealand cricket team on Sunday. The former England international effectively replaces Shane Bond in the role on a two-year contract after impressing the team management during New Zealand’s recently-concluded Test series against England.
According to a report on the official website of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Lindsay Crocker, Head of Cricket of NZC, had stated that Mascarenhas’s performance in the series was overwhelmingly positive, which led to the offer. Mascarenhas’s job description will include an involvement in NZC’s coach education initiative and in the High Performance Centre’s winter and A-squad training programmes.
“Dimitri has impressed in the short time he’s been with the BLACKCAPS and we’re delighted he’s accepted the offer to continue working with the side.
“Both coach Mike Hesson and captain Brendon McCullum have been pleased with his contribution on the tour and have watched him develop excellent working relationships with the bowling group,” Crocker was quoted as saying. READ: Dimitri Mascarenhas to mentor New Zealand bowlers
Mascarenhas expressed elation upon receiving the news of his confirmation.
“I’m very much looking forward to being part of this organisation and playing my part in helping us progress further.
“The BLACKCAPS are blessed with some outstanding bowlers and it was a privilege to be involved with the side during the Test win in Leeds.
“My immediate aim is to assist the incumbents’ continued development and to help maintain a healthy depth in New Zealand Cricket’s elite bowling stocks,” said Mascarenhas. READ: Dimitri Mascarenhas’s magic at Mohali in IPL 2012
Mascarenhas represented England in 20 One-Day Internationals (ODI) and 14 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), and is well-remembered for hitting five sixes off Yuvraj Singh in a single over during a bilateral ODI series against India in 2007.
