Afghanistan team became a member of ICC in 2001 and was granted Test status last year along with Ireland. It has been a great journey for the terror-struck nation so far. They are all set to play their maiden Test against India starting from June 14. The Afghanistan players would be very high on confidence after whitewashing Bangladesh in T20I series.
Dinesh Karthik who was roped in the Indian squad to replaced Wriddhiman Saha talks about Afghanistan’s journey to Test. “It’s been beautiful, isn’t it? Their journey has been an inspiration for international cricket. Everyone knows it’s a tough place and the turmoil that they are going through, but in spite of that they are able to inspire people with their performances.”
There is no doubt that Afghanistan reply heavily on their spin attack. The mystery of Mujeeb Zadran and experience of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi has won it for the team many times in limited overs. With limited infrastructure and lack of proper training Afghanistan has made a long way through. Talking on that Karthik is happy to see the team doing good on international level.
“They’re able to produce big players even in a tournament like the IPL (Indian Premier League),” pointed out Karthik. “They have some key players who are producing some big performances for them. I’m happy to see a country like that doing so well in cricket.
“Today, they are household names in the few years they’ve played. It’s only going to get better. I genuinely hope they have the opportunity to play a lot of Test cricket.”
