Ed Cowan was to be the groomsman at his best friend’s wedding before “a pretty decent excuse” of a dream Test debut against India ensured that the opener would now have to miss the entire ceremony.

Cowan had planned to “sink a few tinnies” at his best friend’s bucks’ party on the opening day of the first Test starting December 26 but his selection in the 13-man squad has poured cold water on the party plans.

The 29-year-old opener will also miss the wedding but the groom-to-be Peter Sanders is more than happy as his friend will get to live a dream he has long cherished.

“It’s a pretty decent excuse,” Sanders, 30, told The Age.

“If they’re chasing 200 on day five they can knock them over quickly and make it for the wedding. He’ll be there in spirit,” he joked.

Cowan was included in place of Phil Hughes, who has been struggling for form, and Sanders said he would be going to watch his friend in action.

“The guys said they were pretty keen to go to the Boxing Day Test on day one and I thought it was a pretty good idea,” Sanders said.

“It so transpired that the groomsman will be hopefully out in the middle. It’s been pretty funny.”

Cowan joked that his friends would make their presence felt on December 26 at the ground.

“They’ll still be there, probably with a banner saying ‘Cowan was meant to sit here’ or something ridiculous like that,” he said. (PTI)
