KL Rahul’s unbeaten 168-run knock powered South Zone to 308 for four at the end of second day’s play in the Duleep Trophy final played at Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi on Thursday. The play was called off early for the second consecutive day due to poor light.

South Zone now lead by 32 runs over Central Zone and are in a strong position to win  Duleep Trophy 2014-15. Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul came out to bat before lunch and tackled the new ball with utmost ease. Rahul collected quick runs from the start and showed signs of form. One of the most striking features of Rahul’s innings was his footwork, he always came to the pitch of the ball and middled the ball with ease.

South Zone reached the 100 in the 24th over of the match. Jalaj Saxena got the first wicket for the Central Zone as Robin Uthappa was dismissed LBW. The first wicket partnership which was worth 168 runs had already laid a strong foundation for the middle-order.  Baba Aparjith and Rahul carried the innings together before Pankaj Singh came back for a final spell with the old ball and picked three quick wickets.

The first batsman to go was Aparjith who fished a ball outside off and got an edge towards the wicketkeeper. The new batsman Dinesh Karthik also went back to the pavilion two balls later when he was served with a reverse swinging delivery which came back in and caught Karthik in front of the wickets. R Prasanna was the last victim for the day for Singh.

Hanuma Vihari and Rahul added 75 runs for the fifth wicket before the play was called off.

Earlier, Central Zone were bundled out in 12 overs. Arindam Ghosh, was the first one to be dismissed by Vinay Kumar. Ali Murtaza was the only batsman who showed some resistance before he was knocked out by Abhimanyu Mithun.
