West Zone scored 12 runs for the loss of one wicket during its chase of a 238-run target at the end of the third day of the ongoing Duleep Trophy quarter-final against East Zone at Lahli in Rohtak on Friday. East Zone had earlier declared at a score of 281 for the loss of seven wickets after Saurabh Tiwary and Sudip Chatterjee led the side with knocks of 109 and 99 respectively.

West Zone began the third day of the quarter-final from their overnight score of 321 for nine. They lost the last batsman  Shardul Thakur within minutes of start of play to gain a lead of 44 runs. East Zone were off to an unwanted start as they lost three quick wickets with just 36 runs being added to their account. A rescue partnership between Tiwary and Chatterjee worth 181 runs saved the day for East Zone. While brought up his century off 153 balls, Chatterjee narrowly missed out on a well-deserved maiden First-Class century after he fell short of his crease to get run out.

Chatterjee’s dismissal was followed by a series of quick wickets as the East Zone dropped from 217 for three for 232 for six. Tiwary’s was caught by West Zone wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel off the bowling of Thakur to leave the side at 279 for seven. Skipper Manoj Tiwary declared soon after to set a 238-run target.

Given the number of runs that had been scored in this match, the target did not seem intimidating for the West Zone and a strong opening partnership is what they would have wanted at the start of their chase. That however, was not to happen as they lost opener Vijay Zol with the scoreboard reading just 12 runs. The umpires took off the bails from the stumps right after the dismissal to signal the end of the day’s play, with West Zone requiring another 226 runs with nine wickets in hand on the fourth and final day.
