The opening day of India’s 2019-2020 domestic fixture at Bengaluru had rain written all over it with only 49 overs possible in the day at the Just Cricket Ground on Saturday between India Blue and India Green in Duleep Trophy 2019-2020.
India Blue skipper Shubman Gill, touted as the next big thing in India cricket, failed to make an impact after a lengthy spell of rain delayed the start. Gill was sent packing by his former U19 World Cup winning teammate, Bengal’s Ishan Porel, who went on to claim two more wickets, to leave India Blue reeling at 112/6 at stumps on Day 1 of the four-day match.
After India Green skipper Faiz Fazal won the toss and opted to bowl first, Rajasthan’s Tanveer Ul Haq provided the first breakthrough in the form of Suarashtra’s wicket-keeper batsman Snell Patel (5), followed by the wicket of Gill by Porel. Opener Rituraj Gaikwad and experienced hand Ankit Bawne then put on 21 runs for the third wicket before Ul Haq had his second in the form of Maharastra’s Gaikwad for 30.
Bawne then went on to lose two more partners, in quick time, in Punjab’s Anmolpreet Singh (14) – recently back from India A tour – to Porel and Andhra’s Ricky Bhui to Uttar Pradesh’s Ankit Rajpoot for 2. However, Bawne found brief support in Kerala allrounder Jalaj Saxena, who made 19 off 29, but fell to Porel late in the day.
At stumps, Bawne was unbeaten on 21 off 103 balls in company of UP’s left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar, batting on 2 off 11 balls.
Brief Scores: India Blue 112/6 (Rituraj Gaikwad 30, Ankit Bawne 21*; Ishan Porel 3/26) vs India Green
