Hosts England were bowled out for a good total of 302 by ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 runners-up, New Zealand in the third of the five-match ODI series at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Sunday. Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes played a good knock of 71 and 68, respectively, while Ben Wheeler and Tim Southee claimed three wickets each in the innings.

Earlier, England skipper, Morgan won the toss and elected to bat first as David Willey and Mark Wood made their way in to the quad, while New Zealand too made a couple of changes in the form of Wheeler for Trent Boult and Matt Henry for Nathan McCullum. England began their batting on a shaky not as with just 34 opening runs on the board, it was Alex Hales, who made his way back after going to score runs in a flurry and fell to Wheeler. He was soon followed by his fellow opener, Jason Roy, the very next over, who fell for mere nine to Southee. England were able to score 41 runs in the mandatory powerplay.

However, it was Joe Root and Morgan, who took control of the innings from thereon and put up a 105-run stand for the third wicket. Root also scored his ninth ODI half-century in the process, before falling to Mitchell Santner for 54 at the score of 139. Morgan along with Ben Stokes, put up a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket as Morgan too scored his 25th ODI half-century, before being bowled by Kane Williamson for an impressive 71.

Out came Jos Buttler, but soon fell for just 13 at the score of 227 to Southee. It was then Stokes, along with Sam Billings, who took charge of the innings in the batting powerplay as England were able to post 58 runs during the phase. Both also put up a 50-run stand for the sixth wicket, with most of the shots coming from Stokes, as he scored his second ODI half-century.

However, after a 61-run stand, Billings was dismissed for 34 to Wheeler in the 42nd over. Out came Adil Rashid, but was dismissed off the very first ball of Matt Henry. David Willey was the next man to accompany Stokes on the crease, but with just eight runs added to the total, Stokes was bowled for 68 by Wheeler.

The tail end batsmen in the form of Willey and Finn were hardly able to contribute much as England were bowled out for 302. Wheeler and Southee were the highest wicket-takers of the innings with three wickets each.

Brief scores:

England 302 in 44.4 overs (Eoin Morgan 71, Ben Stokes 68; Tim Southee 3 for 44, Ben Wheeler 3 for 63) vs New Zealand.
