Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat first. Ashes hopeful Michael Carberry, who had scored a quick-fire 78 off 100 balls in the first tour match, played a calmer knock with captain Cook. The duo looked unruffled against the Australia A bowlers. While both did not score quickly, they did gave no opportunities to the opposition.

The Australian bowlers were made to toil hard and both got to their centuries. The day got better for them as they posted their 150-plus scores. As the day ended at the Bellerive Oval, England were at 318 for no loss.

Cook was batting on 154 off 272 balls with 19 fours. Carberry was on a 288-ball 153 with 22 fours and two sixes.
