Kevin Pietersen’s retirement from limited overs internationals shocked the cricketing fraternity, but his bête noire Nick Knight has said that England’s one-day squad would be better off without the dashing right-hander.

Knight was quoted by The Guardian, “”England’s 50-overs side will be slightly better for having Kevin Pietersen out, because it has not been his bag.”

“The recent two to three years have shown his returns have been well below the expectations for him. He has finished with two hundreds but generally he has been below par,” Knight said.

Knight wasn’t doubting Pietersen’s ability as he said, “It is a brave thing to say because the obvious talent is there. I have looked at the statistics, and they do not add up – so you ask why and look deeper into it.”

The former England batsman turned commentator believes that England would be in a better position. “I think he is right to say he has had enough and move on. That is why I think England are in a better position going forward, because they will have 11 players who are right behind one-day cricket,” he concluded.

These statements come in the wake of the controversy where Pietersen was fined for his comments on Knight’s stint in the commentary box during the first Test between England and West Indies.
