South Africa will be happy to see regular skipper Faf du Plessis back in the side after Dean Elgar’s poor show in the first Test. Live cricket scorecard: England vs South Africa, 2nd Test
England thoroughly dominated in the first Test, putting up a first-innings total of 458, courtesy Joe Root’s 190, Moeen Ali’s 87 and half-centuries from Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad. Though Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada were successful with wickets, they could not restrict the hosts from scoring runs in bulk. In their first innings, South Africa put up 361. Skipper Elgar scored a half-century and so did Temba Bavuma, Quin de Kock and Philander. Moeen was exceptional with the ball, bagging a 4-for.
England built big on their lead the next innings, as Alastair Cook and Jonny Bairstow both scored half-centuries to take the side to 233. But England’s bowling following the innings was clinical as they bundled South Africa for 119, not letting anyone score in excess of 22 runs. Moeen Ali completed with 10 wickets from the Test, 6 of which came in this innings. The second Test will be South Africa’s chance to make a comeback into the series and release the building pressure on them, as England led the 4-match series 1-0.
