It has emerged that Eoin Morgan is continuing to suffer from after-effects of the blow to the side of the head he received when he ducked into a Mitchell Starc bouncer, during the fifth and final One-Day International (ODI) at Old Trafford, Manchester. After a prolonged stay at the crease for immediate treatment and assessment, Morgan walked out retired hurt and played no further part in the game. It was later reported that the blow had caused a mild concussion, despite helmet protection. VIDEO: Eoin Morgan hit on head by Mitchell Starc bouncer during 5th ODI at Old Trafford
The effects of the blow have not fully relented and specialists have recommended against Morgan from resuming duties with Middlesex in the County Championships final round of games. Angus Fraser, the Middlesex director, confirmed with ESPNcricinfo that Morgan was on the road to recovery but not quite match ready for the final county game. “Unfortunately Eoin was still a bit groggy and fuzzy when we assessed him last week,” Fraser said. “He is absolutely fine now and I’m sure he would be available to play if there was another fixture next week,” added Fraser.
The blow and the events that followed immediately afterwards created flashbacks of the tragic demise of Australian Phillip Hughes who had succumbed to a blow received from a short ball on the unprotected area of the neck in a Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales (NSW). The Australians, particularly Starc, were seemingly rattled by the happenings.
