Hard-hitter Ashton Turner, bagged by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 50 lakh, finally makes his IPL debut in Match 32 of IPL 2019 for RR against Kings XI Punjab at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Tuesday.
Turner turned heads earlier this year in March with an unbeaten 84 off just 43 balls in his second ODI for Australia against India in the fourth ODI at Mohali with a record chase, their highest ever successful run-chase in ODI history, chasing a record 359 to keep the series alive, which Australia eventually won.
In the Australian Big Bash League (BBL), Turner amassed 378 runs from 14 games for Perth Scorchers. He was the seventh-highest scorer in the BBL with 378 runs with an average of 31.50, complementing his 193 runs at 38.60 in the domestic one-day cup.
After he was picked at the Auctions last year, Turner commented thus: “I have no idea why they picked me. To wake up to the news that I was going to Rajasthan was really exciting and I can’t wait to get over there,” he told Western Australian the day after the IPL auction.
Shane Warne in a recent interview, disclosed how they have seemingly landed another star on the cheap. Shane Warne revealed that after speaking to England cricketer Dimitri Mascheranas and watching Turner playing in the Big Bash League was the reason behind RR’s move to rope him in for the IPL.
Warne recalled that he had called up the Rajasthan Royals owners and asked them to bag Turner at the auctions in Jaipur this season.
“Just watching him play, a good friend of mine Mascheranas and me were speaking about the Big Bash and he asked me to take a good look at Turner. So, I studied him a bit and then rang the Royals owners and said that they should get Turner as the kid was good. So they went ahead and bought him and now the 50 grands spent on him looks pretty good,” Warne told IANS.
