Alastair Cook looks unlikely to play the fourth Test between India and England as he goes on paternity leave. Cook and his wife Alice are expecting their third child very soon, and the third Test at Southampton begin on August 30.

According the Daily Mail, the ECB is hopeful of Cook being available.

Cook, 33, is England’s all-time leading run-getter in Test cricket but form has deserted him during this series. On Sunday, Cook’s dismissal for 29 lowered his batting average since an uunbeaten 244 at the MCG in December to 19.38.  His scores against India have been 13, 0, 21, 29 and 9*.

As per reports, the likely candidate to replace Cook at the top of the order would be Surrey batsman Rory Burns, who has been on the fringes of Test selection for some time.
