A few days after he got taken down from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Abhishek Nayar has marked his return to Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their assistant coach. The BCCI has not yet confirmed stripping Abhishek from his role, but KKR have already announced him as their coach.

Abhishek Nayar had joined Indian team in July 2024, and joined hands with Gautam Gambhir in the 2024 edition of the IPL. KKR finished their 10-year-long trophy drought under their leadership, and won the trophy for the third time.

The BCCI appointed Gambhir as India’s head coach soon after KKR’s IPL victory. Gambhir picked the members of his coaching staff by himself, and brought in Abhishek, Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate.

Ryan and Morkel still have their designated positions, but Abhishek has been removed. His failures in home series against New Zealand and tour to Australia might be the main reason for him being sacked.
