India’s star all-rounder Axar Patel is sought to be getting the title of captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) for the 2025 season. Since he joined the team in 2019, he has captained the capitals in a few games in the previous two seasons.
Now, according to ANI, Axar is likely going to be promoted to permanent captain in place of KL Rahul. Though the franchise even bought veteran players like Faf du Plessis in the mega auction, Patel being selected over KL Rahul or Plessis showcases the management’s confidence in the all-rounder’s skills.
Before the 2025 mega auction, the team had retained four players, including the star Indian all-rounder. He was a key player in India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year, and recently also got selected as the vice-captain for the Indian team for T20I series against England.
A lot had believed that the Delhi Capitals took KL Rahul so they could promote him as their captain. However, Parth Jindal, a co-owner of the franchise, hinted that there is a probability for the team giving this opportunity to Axar.
“It’s a bit premature to talk about the captaincy. Axar Patel has been with the franchise for a very long time and he was the vice-captain for the last cycle, so we don’t know whether it’s going to be Axar or whether it’s going to be somebody else,” Jindal had told ESPNCricinfo.
