Virender Sehwag took the world by storm with his double ton but it was Ranbir Singh Mahendra, the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who inspired the current India stand-in captain to achieve the feat in Indore on Thursday.
“It is his greatness. Whatever he has said about me reflects his modesty, honesty and humility. I’m thankful to him that he took my name after scoring that knock. It shows his down to earth quality. I’m moved by his gesture. He is not just a great batsman, he is also a great human being,” Mahendra said in an interview to DNA
Mahendra said he was pained to see Sehwag throwing away his wicket in the 20s and that’s why he sent him a message.
“I told him that the ‘nation expects you to score a big century. You should go for a hundred after settling down.’ That was my message for him. I felt that he is such a great batsman, a hundred can come easily to him.
“He promised he would go for a big one. It’s credit to his determination and concentration that he got not just a big one but the biggest one,” Mahendra remarked.
“Thursday night I congratulated him. I told him that the timing of his innings was very important considering that the Australian tour is ahead of us. It is an encouraging sign for the Indian team. It is a well-timed double century and the entire country is with him.”
