Former England captain Michael Vaughan has questioned why the English team was imposed a penalty for a slow over-rate during the Lord’s Test against India, as he claimed that both the teams were maintaining a fairly slow over rate during the match.

England team got fined 10 per cent of their match fee, along with being given two demerit points in their ICC World Test Championship campaign as they had a slow over-rate against India. The hosts were ruled as to being two overs short of the target after time allowances were considered.

Let’s be honest both teams over rates at Lords were very very poor .. How only 1 team has been reprimanded is beyond me…” Vaughan posted on X.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, two World Test Championship points have been deducted from England’s points total.

As a result, England slipped from second to third place in the WTC points table, with Sri Lanka claiming the second spot- just behind table-topper Australia.

Speaking about the match, both India and England had scored a tied total of 387 in their first innings, and the hosts posting a score of 192 in the second. The visitors witnessed a collapse in their top order, and it was only the heroic stand of Ravindra Jadeja that kept the team standing on hopes.

However, the Indian team failed to complete their target total as Mohammed Siraj got dismissed in an unlucky way, leading to the English team winning the match by 22 runs.
