Mario Saliwa, a former South African domestic cricketer, died at the age of 31 after reportedly being stabbed, six days ago. Saliwa, a fast bowler, took 67 wickets in 29 first-class matches and 18 wickets in 20 List-A matches, in a four-year career between 2006 and 2010.
“It is always tragic to see a young life being cut short in its prime,” CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat, was quoted by Cricket South Africa (CSA). “On behalf of the CSA family I extend our thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and cricketing colleagues.”
Geoffrey Toyana, coach of the first-class team Lions, wrote this on his Facebook wall: ‘Sad news to wake up to, RIP to one of my former fast bowler at Easterns spoke to you last Thurs Mario Saliwa!!!!’. Toyana rated him highly, as he has compared him with Makhaya Ntini on Facebook.
Saliwa played for Free State, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Eagles (now called Knights).
