Sourav Ganguly has dismissed reports regarding his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket after he was ignored by the IPL franchises for the forthcoming season.
The rumours started spreading after his statement in an interview for a television channel was interpreted wrongly.
He clarified this soon after landing at the Kolkata airport,”I have already retired from international cricket in 2008. If I don’t get to play IPL I will not be participating in any forms of domestic cricket. But if I do get an opportunity to play IPL I will play domestic cricket to stay fit,”
Ganguly was snubbed by the 10 franchises in the IPL auction and even though KOchi showed interest in signing him later, the governing council rejected it after three franchisees opposed the move to include unsold Indian players back in the IPL.
Ganguly, who retired from International cricket in 2008, is considered to be one of India’s most enigmatic captains. He changed the attitude of the team and helped shape the careers of players like Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan.
Many felt he should have taken a cue from his former team mate Anil Kumble and withdrawn from the IPL auction. What made matters worse was that he doubled his base price in IPL to $400,000, which led to many teams ignoring him.
