New York: Legendary batsman Garry Sobers is among a group of former West Indies cricketers who will participate in two Twenty20 cricket matches. Some of the legends who are joining Sobers to play the matches include former openers Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, Carl Hooper, Courtney Walsh, Richie Richardson, Gus Logie, Deryck Murray, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Darren Ganga, reported CMC. The greats will play two matches against a New York All-Star XI at Idlewild Park in Queens. Greenidge has teamed up with promoter Pooran Ramnanan to bring the legends to New York. Ramnanan said the legends were also expected to participate in a coaching exercise with young players from New York Public Schools Athletic League.

Sobers played 93 Tests for West Indies between 1954 to 1974  scoring over 8,000 runs and picking up 235 wickets along the way. Sobers was considered one of the best all-rounders in that era and he has a highest score of 365. He also has a best bowling figures of 6 for 73. Other players like Walsh, Richardson and Hooper were also very successful players during their time. Hooper in fact captained West Indies for a few years. Chanderpaul is the only player, who is still an active member of the West Indies squad, although he was dropped for the series against Australia.
