Senior politician and Union Rural Development Minister, Gopinath Munde passed away on Tuesday due to heart attack following a road accident in New Delhi. Munde, who was 64, was one of the politicians who were bidding for the post of the president in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) elections last year.

Munde, who was pitted against Sharad Pawar was declared ineligible for the elections on the basis of residential criteria. The MCA rules stated that only a resident of Mumbai can become a governing member of the MCA.

Munde had later on filed an appeal against the decision taken by the cricket governing body. In 2011, Pawar’s nomination was rejected on the same grounds.

Hailing from Beed, Maharashtra, Munde’s name was proposed by a local club named Stylo Cricket Club from Mazgaon as its representative at the polls.

“There are a lot of issues facing the MCA’s clubs and members. They lack facilities and I want to improve them. That’s one of the reasons I want to contest the elections,” Munde had said after filing his nomination at the MCA office.

Meanwhile, Indian Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed extreme shock and grief at the sudden demise of Cabinet colleague and Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde, who passed away here after suffering a cardiac arrest during a road accident on Tuesday morning. In his condolence message, Sonowal stated that in Munde the nation has lost a great patriot and a true leader of the masses.

Sonowal, who is also Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, also conveyed his deep sorrow to the members of the bereaved family and prayed to the almighty to give them strength at this hour of crisis and tragedy.

The Other Backward Class (OBC) face of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, 64-year-old Munde, who made his entry into the Union Cabinet for the first time after the Lok Sabha polls, was on his way to the airport when his car was hit by another vehicle at Prithviraj road-Tughlak road roundabout in the heart of the capital, PTI  reported.
