In his first game since he retired from international cricket in May, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers showed no signs of rustiness as he smacked his way to 93 from 31 balls in a warm-up game ahead of this week’s inaugural Mzansi Super League.

De Villiers was on Tuesday unveiled as captain of Tshwane Spartans for the new T20 league, and immediately got down to business in showing fans what they can expect. His innings helped Spartans beat Jozi Stars by five runs at the Wanderers, getting them to 217/9 in 20 overs before Shaun von Berg and Sri Lanka’s Jeevan Mendis helped pull things back after Ryan Rickelton and Rassie had der Dussen smashed 106 in the first six overs.

The Mzansi Super League begins at Newlands on Friday when de Villiers’ Spartans face Cape Town Blitz.
