The Greater Manchester Police dropped the charges against Pakistani batter Haider Ali due to insufficent evidence to proceed with the investigation into an alleged rape. According to Geo News, Haider is relieved that both the police and Crown Prosecution Service have closed the case.
Last month, a British-Pakistani woman alleged that the 24-year-old cricketer raped her at a hotel in Manchester. which led to his arrest. Haider was reportedly released on bail on August 8 while further inquiries were conducted. With the case now closed, Haider is free to resume travelling.
“After receiving a report on Monday 4 August 2025 of a rape, we have arrested a 24-year-old man. It’s alleged that the incident occurred on Wednesday 23 July 2025 at a premises in Manchester. The man has since been bailed pending further enquiries. The victim is being supported by officers,” a statement from Greater Manchester Police confirmed to ESPNcricinfo.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Haider Ali was arrested in Beckenham, where the Shaheens were playing the final match of their five-match tour. The first two took place on July 22 and 25, while the incident that led to his arrest allegedly occurred on July 23 in Manchester. In the UK, the maximum punishment for this offence is life imprisonment.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a statement confirming that Haider was under investigation for a criminal offence in the UK. The PCB also temporarily suspended him during the investigation, stating that it respects the British judicial system and supports allowing the legal process to proceed without interference.
“Accordingly, the PCB has decided to place Haider Ali under provisional suspension, effective immediately, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Once the legal proceedings are concluded and all facts have been duly established, the PCB reserves the right to take appropriate action under its Code of Conduct, if necessary,” the statement said.
