Hamilton Masakadza has been named as the skipper for the Zimbabwe team in the aftermath of Elton Chigumbura’s resignation from the post following the successful Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Bangladesh. Masakadza is easily the most experienced campaigner in the Zimbabwean team with 29 Tests and 165 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to his name. His new deputy is leg-spinning mainstay Graeme Cremer. Masakadza will skipper Zimbabwe in both Tests as well as the shorter formats. Masakadza has been in stellar form with the bat and coupled with his experience, that makes him a worthy candidate for captaincy. The news of his appointment to the post was broken by news agency Associated Press. Masakadza was in excellent form in the recent series against Afghanistan and Bangladesh. He will look to spread the formula of his success as an individual team as Zimbabwe look to overcome a grim chapter. Chigumbura’s decision to step down was perhaps spurred by the defeats his team suffered at the hands of associate nation Afghanistan in both the ODIs as well as the T20Is. However, he quit the post on a better note by taking an impressive 2-2 series tie against Bangladesh in the 20-over game in their backyard. Masakadza has the daunting role of building the team from there.
