Star South African batsman Hashim Amla completed 5000 runs in Test cricket on Day One of the first Test match against Australia at Brisbane.

Amla, who averages above 50 in the longer format, has already scored an unbeaten half-century in the match and is going strong in the second session.

Amla, who is ranked No 2 in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen, reached the milestone in his 109th Test innings.

He had, earlier this year, become the fastest player to cross 3,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs against the then World No 1 Test team England.
