Batting legend Matthew Hayden has backed the Virat Kohli-led India to win the ongoing four-Test series against Australia which is currently locked at 1-1. India won the first Test in Adelaide to take the lead before the hosts came back to draw level in Perth.
The third Test starts from December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Hayden feels India has a balanced team and a settled bowling unit which makes them the favourites.
“I think India should clinch the series,” Hayden told Mumbai Mirror. “Why? Because, they have a balanced side, an extremely settled bowling unit, and depth in spin. It is hard to win away from home and this will prove to be no different. But India should win, they really are the favourites, they need good partnerships, which they have not had.”
During England tour, coach Ravi Shastri claimed the current Indian team was the best in the last two decades or so which led to polarised opinions.
Hayden, who played 103 Tests and scored 8625 runs at 50.73, agrees with Shastri saying the team India have sent to Australia is the ‘most complete’ to have ever toured the country.
“I think it is. I think it is the most complete Indian team to have ever toured (Australia). India have incredible batting depth, it is very confident in the spin bowling department, it is good in fast bowling too. The young wicketkeeper (Rishabh Pant) is a real breath of fresh air, he will be very good find for Test cricket. The fast bowling unit speaks for itself. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is not even playing in the XI,” Hayden observed.
