The high-profile ICC Champions Trophy 2017 Group A clash between Australia and New Zealand came to a disappointing end at Edgbaston on Friday with the game called off due to rain. Australia, set a revised target of 235 in 33 overs under DLS method, were reeling at 53 for 3 after 9 overs, though Steven Smith was still at the crease. New Zealand will be the more gutted side as they were at an advantageous position despite late exploits by Australian bowlers. The points have been shared. Earlier, Josh Hazlewood registered the second-best figures in ICC Champions Trophy history when he claimed 6 for 52. His took 3 wickets with his final 4 balls. New Zealand were cruising at 254 for 3 after 39 overs before losing their 7 wickets for 37 runs in 36 balls. In a rain-curtailed 46-over game, New Zealand were bowled out for 291 in 45 overs. The New Zealand innings had its share of sheen as skipper Kane Williamson led from the front, slamming his first ODI hundred against Australia and his ninth overall. He was well supported by Ross Taylor who contributed with 46 in the 99-run third wicket stand.


Earlier, New Zealand elected to bat under overcast conditions and got off to a brisk start. Luke Ronchi slammed 65 from 43 balls bringing up his first fifty against his former team Australia. This was also his first as an opener and first since January 2015. He was particularly severe on Pat Cummins, plundering 41 off his 17 deliveries.

Australia play Bangladesh on Monday, while New Zealand will take on England the following day. In the 2013 Champions Trophy the match between both the sides at the very venue too ended in a washout.
