The warm-up matches of ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016 begin from January 22, 2016 when West Indies take on Scotland and South Africa face off against Fiji. The Under-19 World Cup has historically thrown up some huge names and laid the platform for some of the biggest stars of the game at an early age. The tournament offers a superb platform for the most talented young cricketers in a country to play alongside and against similarly young and talented cricketers from all around the world. There have been a number of cricketers have gone on to play Test cricket for their countries after having first made a mark at the Under-19 level.
India will play their first warm-up match against Canada at Dhaka on January 23, followed by another warm-up match against Pakistan, also at Dhaka, on January 25. They will take on Ireland in their first match of the tournament on January 28 before facing New Zealand on January 30, and Nepal on February 1.
Among the most successful cricketers to have played in the Under-19 World Cup for their respective sides include the likes of Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, RP Singh, Piyush Chawla, Mohammad Kaif, and others. Pakistan cricketers like Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Aamer, Imad Wasim, and others too did well in the Under-19 level before graduating to international cricket. Even New Zealand cricketers like Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Corey Anderson, and Hamish Rutherford came through the ranks. Australia’s Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh, James Pattinson, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood too are Under-19 alumni.
