A dominating performance by the New Zealand Women bowlers helped them restrict West Indies Women to 207 for 9 in their second Super Six stage match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the Brabourne Stadium at Mumbai on Monday.
A late batting attack from West Indies ensured that their bowlers had a respectable total to defend after they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
Spinner Anisa Mohammed, who came into bat at number 10, was aggressive and her 31 runs in 32 balls propelled her side to 200. She forged a 45-run stand with Shanel Daley (37).
Incidentally, this was West Indies’ highest score against New Zealand, the previous best being 136 in the 2009 edition.
Spinner Morna Nielsen came up with the best bowling performance from the New Zealand side as she scalped three for 27 runs.
Inviting West Indies to bat, New Zealand pace spearhead Sean Ruck dismissed the two openers to put the Caribbean side under pressure.
Ruck got rid of Natasha Mclean off the ninth ball of the match and dismissed her opening partner Kycia Knight (15) in the 10th over.
One-down batter Stafanie Taylor steadied the innings with Kyshona Knight and the duo added 37 runs before the latter hit an indiscreet shot to be caught at mid-on off left-arm spinner Nielsen.
Taylor made a breezy 49 off 53 balls, with seven fours, before being caught behind off Kiwi skipper Suzie Bates.
West Indies soon lost captain Merissa Aguilleira and they were reduced to 104 for five in the 25th over.
Power player Deandra Dottin, who came into bat after Taylor departed, was her usual aggressive self and her 21-ball 27 was studded with four fours and a six.
From 117 for six, Shanel Daley and Shemaine Campbelle stitched a partnership of 22 before the latter was run out by Nicola Browne at short-midwicket.
