England registered a nine-wicket win over India in the ICC Women’s World T20 Group A match at Galle on Saturday.

Chasing a modest 117, England scored 118 in 17.1 overs.

Skipper Charlotte Edwards scored a fluent unbeaten 50. She was ably complimented by Laura Marsha, who scored a quick-fire 39.

Marsh was the only English wicket to perish as they marched on towards a well deserved win.

Openers got England off to flying start punishing the wayward Indian bowling.

India captain Mithali Raj tried various bowling options but failed to get a breakthrough.

The experienced Jhulan Goswami gave away 20 runs from her two overs, while

Earlier, England put on disciplined show to restrict India to 116 for six in 20 overs.

Poonam Raut (51) was the top scorer for India while, Mithali Raj scored a gritty 35.

Laura Marsh was the most successive bowler for England with figures of two for 22.

Poonam and Mithali scripted a partnership of 75 runs to steadied the Indian innings after early wicket.

Amita Sharma was the first to fall to Katherine Brunt in the third over of the match.

Brunt had Amita caught by wicket-keeper Sarah Taylor for two runs.

India looked set for a big score but once Poonam departed, England looked to claw back.

The following batswomen failed to tackle the English bowlers as they marched back to pavilion in quick succession.

The India skipper continued to hold fort at one end as wicket tumbled at regular intervals.

India batswomen somehow managed to take the score past the 100-run mark.

India won the toss and chose to bat against England
